What To Choose For Wedding Reception Music?

September 23, 2009

No wedding is complete without celebration, and no celebration is complete without music. The traditional name for the wedding celebration conducted after the ceremony is the wedding reception, and like any party it need to have music appropriate to the occasion.

A wedding reception is a joyous occasion, a time for congratulations and good cheer. Good choreography of the events of the wedding reception can be very dramatic. The arrival of the newlywed couple should be to music designed to foster a cheerful mood for the outset.

Guests should be greeted by music which puts a spring in their steps and generally elevates mood. If a glamorous up-market ambience is the desired effect, instruct the musicians to use light classical or swing. If you want a friendlier family-oriented ambience, traditional and popular music can be appropriate.

The matter of how the music is provided is an important one to consider. The most popular option is to have a live band composed of several performers. Another option is to engage the services of a disc jockey to emcee the event. Finally, there is always the option of pre-recorded music. Hiring a live band or a disc jockey is the most desirable option, but before you book a band or performer for the wedding reception, you should request a sample of their music.

Make sure that they are clear on the extent of their emcee duties. Another option is to use a duo or trio of performers instead of a full band. A duo should be sufficient for a party of 70, while a trio is recommended for up to 100 guests. Larger parties will require larger bands.

No matter what size band you choose, you should discuss with them your specific choices for music well before the event, and you should ask them to provide you with ideas to help make the reception even more entertaining and memorable. If you choose to use a disc jockey you will need to plan your wedding reception music early, because good talent tends to be booked fast.

You do not want to be forced to choose between a new disc jockey with little experience at weddings, and your cousin’s karaoke machine.
