Wedding Dress Patterns – What Kind Of Choices Are There?

August 2, 2009

Ding dong! The wedding bells are ringing and they are ringing for you! Congratulations! You are getting married. Now let’s get down to business. There is so much to do and the most important thing is choosing your dress. This is you special day and everyone will be looking at you. So you definitely want to be looking your best and be in a memorable dress.

Many brides do not know where to start or they have too many people giving them advice. If you do not already know a lot about dress styles then bridal magazines are a good place to get an education. They will show you the very latest in styles as well as give you a working knowledge of the terms used in describing wedding dresses.

After perusing the magazines, take a realistic look at your own body. You will want a dress that flatters your body type and hides any flaws. Also, you will want to consider the type of wedding you are having as well as your own personality. Is it a destination wedding? Formal church wedding? Outdoors or indoors? All of these are important considerations as well as the month of the wedding.

The bride can always be more formal than the rest of the wedding but not less formal. You have probably learned from the magazines that there are basically four types of weeding dresses – ball gown, empire, A-line and sheath. There can be numerous variations on these four styles.

Think Cinderella when you think ball gown. This dress features a fitted top, tight waist and a full flowing skirt. This is a more traditional type dress. Think Juliet when you think empire waist. This style has a waist coming in right under the breasts and a skirt flowing down. This skirt is not as full as the ball gown. The bust is accentuated and this style flatters a lot of body types. The A-Line style is a more modern design than fairy tales princesses. It accentuates the body and is a popular style. It really does not have a waist per se as the dress flows down from the shoulders. Many brides chose this style. The sheath is a very form fitting dress which clings to the body. You have to have a certain body type to be able to successfully wear this dress. But if you do, you will get a lot of compliments.

Now that you know the four basic types you can move on to other decisions. You will have to decide on sleeves or sleeveless, halter or not, straps or not, embellishments or simple, and trendy or elegant. There are also a variety of colors as well as colors of trim. The work has just begun! Remember this is YOUR day and you should choose a dress that pleases you. But keep in mind that you should feel comfortable and beautiful. Have a joyous day and may your love last forever!
