Unique Wedding Cakes – Use Your Imagination
October 13, 2009
After the ceremony and the food and the dancing, there comes–the cake! But how many people really get excited over the traditional tiered bridal cake with yellow cake and white or ivory icing? There are ways to stir interest and create memories if you let your imagination have free range and are not stuck to one idea of what a wedding cake must be.
If you’re putting your personal stamp on the rest of the wedding items, why not continue as you dream the perfect sweet creation to cap the event? It’s a relatively simple way to add a fairy tale stamp to your perfect day. We think of the traditional cake as one with tiers layered one on top of the other, either directly or supported by columns. But you don’t have to have a tiered cake.
You can have a cake in the shape of something meaningful to you–the place where you met or a symbol of the honeymoon destination, for instance. You can have tiers that aren’t traditionally assembled but that seem to float or balance in mid-air. Icing can be dark or light, and you can use fresh flowers or trinkets or whatever decorations create interest and maybe even contrast.
Dark icing allows bright colors to pop and gives a fresh look. Flavors of the cake can be anything you and your guests would love, perhaps even carrot or cheesecake. Flavors can be mixed, as in half one flavor, half the other. For a whimsical touch, have the cake built around something else such as a fountain or a sculpture.
Add as much sensory pleasure as you can. It’s the day for that so why stint if something stirs your fancy? Some folks even forego one cake for tiers of cupacakes. These are fun and easy to serve. They can be in one flavor/color or many that compliment each other. It’s somewhat nontraditional, but pretty enough to add a touch of whimsy.
Some folks have even had family members contribute cupcakes they baked themselves. You might ice them in the colors of your flowers or bridesmaid dresses. Or if you’re really ready to be different, try donuts! That would be unexpected and rich and flavorful and feed lots of folks’ cravings! In many ways, it’s a day of extravagance, so mix something old (the tiered effect) with something new (donuts or other pastries) and watch people enjoy themselves.
Dream, imagine, talk with your other half, collect photos and ideas, and sit with a good and flexible pastry chef who will certainly help you make your choice a reality. Romance is in the air, and the cake can symbolize your romance in a way that nothing else at the wedding can.
