Strapless Wedding Dresses – Can You Pull It Off?

October 30, 2009

The look can be very casual, as for a beach wedding, or more traditional and sculpted. On the other hand, this is not a look that everyone can wear. Lots of us are budget conscious these days, and unless you can afford to buy a very nice gown and have it fitted by someone with expertise, don’t do strapless.

You don’t want to be tugging at your bodice all day and evening, and really there’s nothing but you to keep this dress up and in place. Ditto if you’re an active bride who will want to fast dance in this same dress during the reception. Comfort isn’t everything, but it is important and you will look more radiant if you are more comfortable. If you’re too small on top or very big, this may not be the look for you.

It may not be for you if you’re heavy as it would call attention to shoulders and arms that you would not want to highlight. (Strapless with a slight off shoulder sleeve is possible if the arm is just a bit of a problem or if you want to wear gloves for a more formal look.) If you’re just on the cusp of overweight, a wedding basque or corset might help. The boning will tuck you in all the right places and give shape and support.

Best also to notice whether you’re the kind of woman whose weight fluctuates wildly because you don’t want to have it fitted for one body and then find on your big day that it doesn’t quite flatter and might be in danger of falling off or showing too much flesh. You want to be serene and worry free on your wedding day, so take your time. Look realistically at those who wear those gowns in the photos and decide what might compliment your face and figure.

Collect pictures from more than one bridal magazine and go to a bridal shop to try on different styles. The photo will help the sales personnel to pick out of the many rows of silk and tulle those that are most like your preferences. From there they will help you to decide which really suit you. Ultimately, of course, it’s your choice and you’ll know it when you find it. Just don’t rush and have some fun with the process.
