Make A Wedding Cake – It’s Not As Hard As You Think

October 27, 2009

Wedding cakes can be expensive! Cut costs and get just what you want by making your own wedding cake. Even if you are the bride, this is a task that either you or a loved one would like to engage in. Figuring out what kind of cake you want

You may have dreamt for years about the cake you want for your wedding, or you may only have a vague notion of what you desire. The first step is to figure out what you want by looking at pictures in magazines and books. One inexpensive way to find a cake design you like is to visit your local library and check out numerous wedding magazines and cake decoration books.

Many of these even walk you through the necessary steps for creation. Once you have determined the style of cake you like, you can begin to figure out the logistics for making it come to life. Planning the construction of your cake

Every cake is the sum of its parts. Take a close look at the picture of your cake and figure out what components build the cake – How many tiers does it have? What shape are the layers? What type of frosting covers it? Is it buttercream or smooth fondant? How many people do you need to serve? With this information, you can begin planning the logistics. You will need to purchase the appropriate size baking pans and the right amount of ingredients for your frosting.

One hint is to check with a local bakery and see if they would be willing to bake the cake layers for you for a reasonable price and allow you to pick them up undecorated. This saves quite a bit of hassle in buying pans and baking time. This can be rather inexpensive.

Another hint is that if the cake you desire will not feed enough guests, you can have one show cake on display and numerous other flat cakes in the back of the kitchen with the same filling, so that when the cake is taken to the kitchen to be cut, the flat cakes can be served as well. This saves the hassle of creating an enormous decorated cake.

It is always wise to trial any creation so that any kinks can be worked out. If you do not opt to have a local bakery bake the cake layers, you can bake your own using boxed cake mix or from a recipe. Always make sure to cool the layers completely before icing. Icing a cake works best when you apply a light layer to tack down any cake crumbs and then apply a heavier layer over top.

Just use a pastry spatula to smooth it on and get out any lumps. If this version is appealing to you, continue forth with the real wedding cake. It is unrealistic to think that you will be able to bake your wedding cake on the day of your wedding.

In fact, it is better to have it done the day prior so any hiccups or problems can be rectified before there is a time crunch. If your wedding cake has tiers, it should be assembled at the reception location, taking care to line up all layers with supports.
