Christmas Wedding Favors – The Magic Of The Holiday Season

January 17, 2010

All weddings are perfect in their own way, and any season can provide a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony, but there is something special about a winter wedding during the holidays. So many people opt for sun and blue skies, but a couple that chooses the colder, darker days of the end of the year is showing a kind of confidence, a belief that their love is warm enough to illuminate the shortest days of the year.

These couples have an eye for beauty that doesn’t stop at the easy green and color of warm summer days, but extends to the brilliance of snow and hard icicles, of candlelight and close quarters. The winter holidays are already redolent of festivity and family gatherings, and they are packed with traditions and symbols that naturally invite themselves into the rituals of the wedding.

From the invitations to the cake, to the décor of the reception hall and the fabric of the gown, the season can find expression, and as it is the season of giving, the little wedding favors of the bride and groom gain added significance. What better opportunity to show your love and appreciation of your guests, your dearest family and friends, and to share in this season of giving, than to give away little favors that reflect this spirit?

Begin with the packaging: nothing could be more adorable than to give your little gifts in elaborately wrapped but miniature boxes: tiny presents in gleaming wrapping with bows and curled ribbons, trimmed with poinsettia berries, holly or mistletoe. Make these little boxes as extravagant and enticing as possible. You could fill these boxes with almost anything, but a great idea is to give every guest a different little Christmas ornament.

There is no end of beautiful ornaments to be had in almost any store at that time of year: painted wooded figurines, elaborate glass balls, little angels, feathered birds, and crystal icicles. Or think of making them yourselves. The important thing is that every one is unique so that every single person will take his or her ornament home to become a part of their own tree, their own tradition.

Each year, when they take out that ornament, they will remember when and where they got it and your wedding will live again and again, perpetually celebrated as a little part of the lives of all who were there. If the idea of giving individual ornaments does not appeal, then seasonal treats might be a good idea: candied almonds, colorful holiday pastilles, or dark chocolate truffles.

If these are too rich for your taste, then you might think of something a little more playful and less serious: packets of tea or cocoa, single marshmallows, candy canes, matches, or a simple winter apple. With a more simple gift, the wrapping could be more simple as well – perhaps a little “Christmas stocking” made from a baby’s sock. Whatever you choose to give away, a winter wedding itself will always be the most special gift: rarer, braver and more precious than the usual sunny summer day.
