Have Some Fun With Beach Wedding Cakes

December 31, 2009

With nary a backwards glance, couples today are saying “No thanks” to the stiff formality and societal rules which governed weddings for the last 100 years! Couples are being married while underwater, while bungee jumping, while skiing…and yes, while wandering barefoot along a beach, with warm sand, sun and water forming the perfect backdrop for a unique and romantic wedding.

The wedding cake should reflect the theme of your nuptuals; in this case adventurous and untraditional. While our own imagination is the only limit to what can be done with a beach themed cake, there are some decisions that will have to be made early in the process. The first thing to consider is your budget and how many guests will be served. Professionally made cakes range in price from $2.00 to $15.00 and typically weigh just two ounces.

Complexity of design and construction are the major price factors…if you are on a limited budget, keep it simple! The shape of the cake must also be decided. While tiers of butter cream are traditional, you’re not on a beach because you follow all the rules! Round, square, sheet, individual cupcakes, and small cakes on each table, pre-packaged slices that double as wedding gifts…again, it’s your decision based on preference and budget. A benefit having small cakes on each table is that they double as centerpieces, saving money on flowers.

Decorations could include edible shells, star fish and seaweed! You location is unique, but it can come with its own unique problems . Hot sun will melt most frostings. Blowing sand could give an undesired “crunchiness” to the confection. Flies, mosquitoes and other pests will find a sugary treat irresistible.

Nettings, a special gazebo or a “wedding march” as the cake is delivered later in your ceremony should be considered. There are also “ornamental cakes” which are not edible, but can be assembled and decorated in beach proof materials available. (That’s when the pre-packaged slices would come in handy). The time of day you choose for your ceremony will guide you to the best decision…obviously the problems at high noon are different from those at dusk or the evening.

If you really want to have some fun, consider making your own cake! Call some friends, visit a craft store, and let your imagination run wild. Friends find this kind of “bride’s party” a lot of fun and a chance for a final bonding prior to your marriage. Magazines such as Family Circle and Good Housekeeping always have cute ideas for cakes, including one that used teddy graham cookies in bathing suits, lounging under little drink parasols! The most important thing to remember is that this is YOUR day, a happy wonderful time that reflects who you are and what you love. Good luck!
